The appointment of Rakesh Maria as Mumbai’s police Commissioner has triggered a row within the force with two senior IPS officers, Javed Ahmed and Vijay Kamble, who were bypassed in the appointment going on leave on Monday.
While Mr. Ahmed was promoted to the post of Director General (Home Guards), Mr. Kamble was appointed Commissioner for Thane, close to Mumbai.
Sources close to Mr. Ahmed said he had asked the government to send him on a Central deputation. He is also considering resignation. On Monday, he handed over the charge of his old post at the Director General’s office but did not assume his new post.
Mr. Kamble, too, has not taken up his new post. “Both the officers feel the appointment was politically motivated and the recommendations of the Police Establishment Board were ignored,” senior police sources said.
The Board had recommended Mr. Kamble and Mr. Ahmed’s names.
However, Mr. Maria’s name was later added by the State Home Department, sources said.
