Mumbai: The logo of a popular start-up on the t-shirt worn by one of the three accused in a recent attempt to murder case led the arrest of all the three accused by the MIDC police.

On June 20, businessman Ramju Ahir, a resident of Andheri (East), was on his way home from Regent Hotel in Andheri when he was intercepted and attacked by a bike-borne assailant.

“The assailant stabbed Mr. Ahir before speeding away, and nearby closed circuit television cameras captured the incident. While the face of the attacker was not clear in the footage, the camera captured the logo of Swiggy, a food delivery chain, on the back of his T-shirt, which provided us our first lead,” said an officer with the MIDC police.

Mr. Ahir was rushed to the Holy Spirit Hospital in Andheri, where he was treated for his injuries. Meanwhile, the MIDC police registered a case of attempt to murder against unidentified persons under the Indian Penal Code and initiated investigations.

The police sent a team to the Swiggy head office in Andheri to try and identify the assailant, and found that Swiggy has 1,800 male employees. The investigating team started questioning everyone about their whereabouts on the day of the stabbing, until they eventually zeroed in on Abhishek Samant, a delivery boy who had allegedly taken a contract to kill Ahir to make a fast buck, said officers.

Samant was placed under arrest on June 27. Based on the information learnt from Samant’s interrogation, the police sent a team to Rajasthan and arrested Kanna Swami Durai Kannan Chinnaswamy, who had allegedly enlisted Samant for the murder.

“The motive behind the hit seems to be a personal rivalry and is being verified,” the officer said.
