A 26-year-old man stabbed a woman in Bhandup on Tuesday afternoon after she refused to marry him. The man then grievously stabbed himself. The police said both of them are unconscious and are in a serious condition.

According to the Bhandup police, Akash Pandey, the accused, stayed next door to the woman in Tulsheth Pada area in Bhandup (West). Pandey worked in a private firm in Mumbai, while the woman had just completed a computer course and was in search of employment.

The police said that Pandey had been dating the woman for the last three years, and had recently proposed to her. However, she was unsure about marrying him as she knew her parents would not approve of the alliance.

A police officer said, “On Tuesday afternoon, Pandey met the women near their residence and once again proposed to her. She turned down his proposal again and told him she could not go against her parents’ wishes. They had an heated argument over it and then returned to their homes. A short while later, Pandey barged into the woman’s house armed with a kitchen knife and stabbed her in the stomach several times. He then turned the knife on himself. Both of them collapsed on the spot and were rushed to hospital after the woman’s parents raised an alarm.”

They were admitted to a private hospital in Bhandup, and the woman was later shifted to Sion Hospital for treatment as her intestine had ruptured. Pandey sustained injuries to his liver.

Hospital authorities informed Bhandup police about the incident, and a team of officers was sent to both hospitals to make inquiries. The police recorded statements of the parents of Pandey and the woman. The police have recovered the kitchen knife used in the assault from woman’s house. A case has been registered against Pandey.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Rashmi Karandikar, the Mumbai Police spokesperson, confirmed the incident and said Pandey has been booked for attempt to murder under the Indian Penal Code.
