Two people died in an accident on Palm Beach road in the wee hours of Saturday at 4 am after a speeding Mercedes rammed into a bike. The impact also broke the railing on the road side.

The incident happened at 4 a.m. when Rahul Ramesh Patil (36), a resident of Wahal village in Panvel was driving his Mercedes towards CBD Belapur. Near Sector 50, he rammed onto Ruben Robinson Pillai (25), a Kalamboli resident who was on his way home from work. “The car was overspeeding and the bike was on the third lane. When the driver of the car noticed the bike, he tried to save him but lost control. We have registered a case for rash driving,” Senior Police Inspector Smita Jadhav from NRI coastal police station said.

Patil, a businessman, also ran the RR foundation. “My brother used to love to go on long drives at odd hours when the traffic is relatively less. He is survived by his wife and a daughter who is in Class I and a two-year-old son,” said Sandeep, a cousin.

Meanwhile, Pillai, originally from Goa, was a bartender at Vashi restaurant and was returning home after night shift. “He always took a bus to work. On Friday, he missed his bus and took his friend’s bike. He was the eldest in his family. He is survived by a younger brother and parents. His family is inconsolable,” said Suresh Pandit a friend.
