Prima facie, extortion seems to be the motive

January 08, 2018 12:58 pm | Updated 01:59 pm IST - Mumbai:

Prominent Shiv Sena leader and former municipal corporator Ashok Sawant was stabbed to death outside his home here on Sunday, an official said. He was 63.

According to the police, Sawant had returned home from a meeting around 11 p.m. when two persons, who lay in wait, pounced on him with knives and choppers outside his house in Kandivali east.

The leader sustained at least 17 wounds and reportedly succumbed to his injuries outside his residence in Samata Nagar. A police team rushed him to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead on admission.

One killer identified

Police have checked CCTV images in the locality and have identified one of the two killers. The preliminary motive behind the crime appeared to be extortion.

Parts of Kandivali east observed a spontaneous shutdown after the killing of the two-time municipal corporator.

His funeral was slated later on Monday evening.
