Farhan Azmi, youth president of the State unit of the Samajwadi Party and son of MLA Abu Asim Azmi, filed a complaint with the Mumbai Commissioner of Police on Wednesday alleging that he received threat calls from Hindu Sena activists.

On July 21, Farhan Azmi said he received a phone call from the mobile number 7620596969. The caller claimed to be an activist of the Hindu Sena, a Hindu extremist outfit based in Rajasthan. According to the complaint, the caller threatened to kill him and his family members, particularly his father, the sitting MLA from Mankhurd Shivaji Nagar. The caller also threatened to plant bombs in vehicles and offices belonging to the Azmi family.

In his letter, Mr. Azmi said, “The caller used offensive, abhorrent and vile language while referring to my family and the Muslim community. I believe that the caller acted in such a manner to provoke undesired reaction from the Muslim community.” Mumbai Commissioner of Police Datta Padsalgikar said, “We received a complaint letter from Mr. Azmi. We are checking the authenticity of the call and will take action as per law. Investigation is on.” However, in a series of tweets since July 21, Mr. Azmi said, “Hindu Sena terms my #lovemarriage to@Ayeshatakia as #lovejihad and threatens to avenge this. They want me to apologise or face consequences.”

In another tweet, he said, “Have received 7 #lifethreatening phone calls in the past 3 days. Had no clue that #rightwing #fringe is now mainstream #Politics in #India. Don’t hatge me for saying this but I’m just counting backwards. (sic)”
