Mumbai: Rainbow Warrior III, the Greenpeace ship that travels across the globe to spread awareness about climate change, reached Mumbai on Thursday. The ship will be anchored at Indira Dock in south Mumbai for three days, and will conduct various programmes to highlight the importance of sustainable agriculture, solar energy, clean air and waste management.
The third of the Rainbow Warrior series, the ship has been a regular initiative of Greenpeace since 1978. The Rainbow Warrior III was made in 2011, after the two earlier ships were retired.
For a better world
“Though the government has reaffirmed its support to global climate change mitigation, achieving the objective would be impossible without public awareness, their participation and their cumulative aspirations. The Rainbow Warrior initiative seeks to drive forward Greenpeace’s goal of a Billion Acts of Courage, which basically provide driven solutions for a better world,” said Rahul Prasad, communication campaigner of Greenpeace India.
Captain Hettie Greenan, who commands the vessel, added, “Rainbow Warrior has been specifically built as a campaigning ship. We have been sailing to various parts of the world for three months with the purpose of developing campaigns to save our environment.”
Between Thursday and Saturday, Greenpeace India has planned photography exhibitions and workshops. Musical performances by celebrity figures are also on the schedule.
“We began this trip from Goa and after Mumbai, we will go to Kochi so that we can keep spreading our message,” said Diya Deb, campaign director of Greenpeace India.
