Mumbai: The Bandra police on Monday registered an FIR of abetment to suicide in the case of pianist Karan Joseph, who killed himself at his friend’s residence on Saturday morning.

Joseph (29), a native of Bengaluru, was staying at the Bandra residence of his friend Rishi Shah for a month. He killed himself at around 8:45 a.m. on Saturday. His parents told the police they suspected that he was being harassed and sought a detailed investigation.

According to the police, the FIR was registered on Monday afternoon after statements from Joseph’s parents were recorded.

“His parents have said there was no reason for Joseph to have killed himself unless someone was harassing him. We have registered an FIR against unknown persons,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone IX) Paramjit Singh Dahiya.

Mr. Dahiya said Joseph’s parents have not named anyone as a suspect.

Meanwhile, Mr. Shah told the police in his statement that Joseph seemed upset when he reached his house around 7 a.m. on Saturday.

“Joseph told Mr. Shah that he had had an argument with someone at a hotel in Bandra. Mr. Shah told him not to let it affect him too much, but Joseph was brooding over it. We are trying to find out which hotel he was at, and who he had this argument with,” said an officer with the Bandra police.

Investigating officers said they are conducting background checks on friends with whom Joseph had been interacting on a regular basis. Their statements will also be recorded to find out if anything in Joseph’s behaviour indicated that he was being harassed by someone.

“Drug abuse has not been ruled out, and we are investigating accordingly” said a police officer.
