The eight alleged Pakistani nationals, caught with drugs worth Rs. 600 crore by the Navy and the Coast Guard off the Porbandar coast this past week, were brought to Mumbai on Sunday.

The Mumbai Police also initiated the process for registration of an FIR in connection with the incident at Yellow Gate police station here on Sunday evening.

Since the boat in which the accused were travelling in was captured in international waters, the case had to be registered in Mumbai. The jurisdiction of all such violations committed along the country’s West Coast lies with the Yellow Gate police station.

‘All angles being probed’

The Port Zone police would now take over the probe of the case and would also seek the custody of the eight men on board. All the eight would be produced before a court here on Monday, said officers.

“We will register the case by late night. We are looking into all legal angles and going through the details of the accused provided to us by the Coast Guard,” said a senior police officer.

Asked about the provisions the accused would be booked under, the officer said while those under Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances were certain to come into play, they were taking legal opinion for slapping other laws, including those pertaining to trespassing.

Earlier on April 24, when the Coast Guard officials produced the eight men before a Gujarat court, the court ruled that the case was beyond the jurisdiction of the court.
