Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation on Friday showcased safety measures in place for personnel working on Metro 3 project’s tunneling operations.

S.K Gupta, Director (Projects), MMRC, said, “We have not had any injuries during tunneling work so far.” MMRC is providing all workers entering the tunnel with a self-rescuer apparatus, which provides oxygen for one hour in case of an emergency. “We allow only 25 workers and five visitors to enter the tunnel at any given time. Everyone will need to carry this device. We will also be monitoring the levels of 14 gases, which may spread if there are any gas pockets,” Mr Gupta said.

The MMRC has also provided special safety training such as first aid and basic fire fighting. There are walkie-talkies and telephones installed at every 100 metres in the tunnel. An eye wash station is provided at every tunnel boring machine.
