Suicide bid: cop was rapped for misplacing documents

April 20, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:40 am IST - Mumbai:

A day after a constable with the Tilak Nagar police attempted suicide at his workplace, police officials on Tuesday said that he was pulled up by his superiors for misplacing some court-related documents and he was also facing some problems at home.

On Monday afternoon, constable Pandurang Desai consumed a liquid detergent at the Tilak Nagar police station and was rushed to Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar, where he is currently under treatment.

Suicide note

He had, in a suicide note found in his pocket, alleged that he was being harassed by senior police inspector Vijay Khaire, in-charge of the police station. An inquiry is now being conducted into the incident.

“Inquiries till now have revealed that Mr Desai had misplaced some documents required to seek a warrant in the local metropolitan magistrate’s court against an accused in an ongoing case. Following this, he was pulled up by his superiors on Monday morning. He was already agitated on Monday as he was facing some personal problems at home, and the incident worsened his state of mind, after which he took the extreme step,” said a senior officer with the Mumbai Police.

As part of the enquiry being conducted by Assistant Commissioner of Police Abdul Rauf Sheikh, Deonar division, a statement will be recorded from Mr Khaire on Wednesday, and Mr Desai’s colleagues will be quizzed.

Discharge in two days

Mr Desai is expected to be discharged within a day or two, after which a detailed statement will be recorded from him.

“After completing the enquiry, a report will be sent to the office of the Commissioner of Police, and further course of action will be decided by the top brass,” the officer said.

Sources said an interim report of the enquiry is expected to be sent to senior police officials by Wednesday.
