PIL against liquor permit dismissed

August 09, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 09:24 am IST - Mumbai:

The Bombay High Court on Monday disposed of a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking to scrap the permit for liquor consumption in Maharashtra.

A division Bench of Justice Abhay Oka and Justice A.A. Sayed was hearing the PIL filed by activist Ketan Tirodkar.

The court said it was a matter of policy and asked the petitioner to make a representation to the State government.

The PIL said the law stipulates that only a person having a permit can be served liquor. “Most of the people do not have permits, but they get drinks on placing order because records are fabricated. Hotels and restaurants, in connivance with the Excise department, prepare permits in various names in advance and show that liquor has been served to them though the actual consumers may be different.”
