Mill workers defer stir over affordable homes

April 12, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:39 am IST - MUMBAI:

The Kamgar Sanghatana Kruti Samiti on Monday called off its indefinite hunger strike outside Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ residence from Tuesday following assurances from the Maharashtra government that it will resolve the deadlock over houses for textile mill workers this week.

The Samiti, a collective of five mill workers unions, had threatened to go on indefinite hunger strike outside Varsha, Mr Fadnavis’ official bungalow at Malabar Hill from Tuesday to protest the delay in providing affordable housing for textile mill workers.

“We received a call from the Chief Minister’s Office today, and they have called us for discussion on the issue tomorrow afternoon. On their request, we have called off the agitation for now. We will see what emerges from the discussion and decide the next course of action,” said Datta Iswalkar, who has been spearheading the agitation for rehabilitating textile mill workers in defunct textile mill compounds.
