Vaijendra Bisen, the prime accused in the kidney transplant racket was busted at Hiranandani Hospital in Powai last week, is known in Gujarat as a man who can get kidneys for patients, according to police.
The racket was busted on July 14 when a local social worker alerted police about a patient, Brijkishore Jaiswal, who was planning to get a kidney transplant using forged documents.
The police arrested Jaiswal and Bisen, who had facilitated the transplant, along with two other middlemen and Jaiswal’s son. The donor, Shobha Thakur, who was posing as Jaiswal’s wife, has also been booked in the case but has not been made an accused yet.
Investigating officials said the deal for the kidney was struck in Surat itself, and that Jaiswal got himself admitted to the Hiranandani Hospital on Bisen’s instructions.
“Jaiswal was in need of a kidney and did not have a relative who could donate a kidney, as only close relatives can donate a kidney under the existing laws. He learned about Bisen through some of his friends in the medical industry in Surat and contacted him. Investigations have revealed that Bisen is known in Gujarat as a facilitator who can get kidneys for patients in need, and also has a network of middlemen in the state for finding donors,” said an officer.
He said that after Jaiswal contacted Bisen, the latter called him to Mumbai, and subsequently alerted his contacts in Gujarat, asking them to find a donor. His contacts then found Shobha Thakur, who comes from an extremely poor household in Gujarat.
