A 22-year-old instructor with a computer training academy in Ghatkopar was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly harassing his 17-year-old student to drive her to commit suicide.
According to the Ghatkopar police, the Class XI student hanged herself on July 30 at her Ghatkopar residence. She was found hanging from a ceiling fan by her father, and was taken to Rajawadi Hospital, where she was declared brought-dead.
“On Monday, the victim’s father approached us and told that she had been depressed over the last few weeks due to frequent disagreements with an instructor at her computer class. He further said that she had been in a relationship with the instructor for the last three months, and he had some pictures of her in his cellphone, which he was refusing to delete. The victim was afraid that he might misuse the pictures, and had been pleading with him to delete them,” said senior police inspector Vyankat Patil, Ghatkopar police station.
The victim had confided in her father a few days before her suicide. However, her father has said in his statement that nothing in her demeanour suggested that she might take the extreme step.
Based on her father’s complaint, the police arrested the instructor identified as Shambho Madhesia (22), a Thane resident. He was booked for abetment to suicide under the Indian Penal Code and was produced in court, which remanded him in police custody till August 9. “We did not find any pictures of the victim in the accused’s cellphone. We will be sending the phone for forensic analysis,” Mr. Patil said.
