CM orders inquiry into fisherfolk lathi-charge

May 15, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:46 am IST - PANAJI:

After standing his ground till Saturday morning ruling out an inquiry as there was no police lathi-charge on the protesting fisherfolk, Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar later in the day relented and ordered a magisterial probe into the incident. The decision followed his second meeting with the leaders of fisherfolk, who were protesting the use of LED lights in trawlers.

The government also ordered an inquiry into the role of north Goa Superintendent of Police and sought a report within a month, the CM said. The action against LED light-enabled trawlers will be taken according to the recent notification.

Earlier in the day, he said that the government had fulfilled all demands of the fisherfolk and that they should stop their agitation. On Thursday evening, the police had resorted to lathi-charge when violence erupted outside the Directorate of Fisheries where the fishermen were protesting. But the CM had denied lathi-charge saying the police had to disperse the crowd after they prevented the Director of Fisheries from boarding her vehicle.

The incident had been condemned by all parties and civil society groups.
