NCP candidate Ramraje Nimbalkar was on Thursday elected as the chairman of the Legislative Council of Maharashtra legislature.

Mr. Nimbalkar succeeded senior Congressman Shivajirao Deshmukh, who was voted out last week after NCP moved a no-confidence motion against him and found support from the BJP. The Shiv Sena and the Congress had slammed the tacit tie-up between NCP and the BJP.

Shiv Sena fielded Neelam Gorhe against Mr. Nimbalkar and sought the support of the BJP for its candidate. However, the Sena-BJP jointly boycotted the election on Thursday morning allowing Mr. Nimbalkar, known to be close to the Pawar family, to sail through unopposed.

BJP's Eknath Khadse, and Shiv Sena's Ramdas Kadam and Neelam Gorhe jointly announced the decision to boycott the election.
