Mumbai: The Indian Navy on Wednesday morning set up kitchens across the city to provide food, water, and other assistance to those who are returning home after being stuck through the night due to the heavy rain on Tuesday.

Stranded people

“The Indian Navy deployed teams in areas likely to have stranded people. Food, medical assistance, and water were provided at Churchgate, Byculla, Parel, CSMT, Worli, Tardeo, Mumbai Central, Dadar, Mankhurd, Chembur, Malad and Ghatkopar,” said a Defence spokesperson.

Thousands of office-goers were stranded on Tuesday. While some stayed back at their workplaces, a lot of people were taken in by their friends, family members, and even strangers, who threw open their doors through social media.

Four shelters

On Tuesday, the Navy had set up four shelters, in which thousands of civilian employees, who could not make it back home, were accommodated, and provided food and shelter.

The Navy also had put two dedicated diving teams on standby, while the National Defence Response Force, mobilised 10 teams to supplement the three teams already on standby in the city.
