The Mumbai police on Wednesday arrested a bus attendant with a school in South Mumbai for allegedly sexually assaulting a 3-year-old girl student.

The accused, identified as Prakash Joshi (47), was arrested after the victim's parents lodged a complaint with the Gamdevi Police Station in South Mumbai on Tuesday night.

According to the police, the victim complained about body pain to her mother after returning from school on Tuesday evening. When the parents questioned her further, the girl revealed the incident of sexual abuse by the school bus attendant.

The medical test of the victim confirmed the sexual abuse.

The police is in the process of recording the statements of the driver, cleaner and the female attendant who were on board the bus to ascertain if there were any lapses on the part of the school.

It is mandatory for a female attendant to be present in the bus whenever a student is being ferried to and fro, especially if the first student boarding the school bus and the last child alighting is a female.

The accused has been remanded to police custody until September 18.
