Mumbai: The Mumbai University (MU) on Wednesday blamed the rain and the Ganeshotsav holiday for the delay in announcing results of undergraduate courses, and sought a final extension to declare them by September 19.
Advocate Rui Rodrigues, appearing for the university, told a Division Bench of Justices Anoop Mohta and Bharti Dhangre that staff was not available because of the rain and the festival celebrations.
The court said that in an emergency like this, the university cannot cite unavailability of staff as a reason for delay.
Mr. Rodrigues said the work was not being done by robots, but by humans. He said most of the results were announced by the August 31 deadline, and the rest would declared by September 19.
He placed on record a letter dated September 6 issued by the Director of Examination and Evaluation Board, and said results of 464 of the 477 examinations had been declared. He said results of 5,932 Bachelor of Commerce (Banking and Insurance) students would be announced by Wednesday evening and those of 8,132 students of commerce, accounting and finance will be declared by September 13. He also said that the deadline for the law common entrance test has been extended till September 22.
Deepak Vasave, Deputy Registrar of the Examination Section, was present in court. An MU statement told the court that the university gazette of the respective results will be published on the official website within three days of declaration of results, and individual mark sheets will be forwarded to the respective colleges within seven days.
In the last hearing, Mr. Rodrigues had said that results of all 16 law examinations and all but two arts (151 out of 153 examinations) and science (45 of 47 examinations) exams had been declared. Results of 32 of the 36 management examinations and 170 of the 175 technology courses had already been declared. He had also said that of the 50 exams in the commerce faculty, results of 30 had been declared.
The matter has been adjourned to September 22.
