Mumbai: A two-judge panel of the Bombay High Court has approved the MMRDA proposal to cut 216 trees for the construction of the Metro 7 corridor near the Western Express Highway.

An advocate appearing for the MMRDA told Justices Shantanu Kemkar and Bhushan Gavai that the Court Commissioner’s report had approved his client’s application seeking permission to cut the trees.

The advocate said that the MMRDA had submitted an undertaking that they would replant the trees. He said that if the trees are not cut, the Metro 7 route would be obstructed and would cost the State exchequer dearly.

The panel had recently directed the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited to consider planting trees within High Court premises and along Marine Drive following the cutting of trees to make way for the Metro 3 line.
