A 32-year-old man was arrested on September 10 for criminal intimidation and rape of his eight-year-old niece.

A case has been registered under the The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012, at the Waliv Police Station, Palghar. The man has also been charged under various Sections of the Indian Penal Code, including Section 376 (commits rape on a woman when she is under 12 years of age) and Section 506 (criminal intimidation).

The accused, Surinder Kumar Tiwari, and the girl were living in the same house in Wakan Pada, opposite the Plazo Building, Nalasopara.

“The man was in a relationship with the girl’s mother,” said Mahesh Patil, Inspector at Waliv Police Station. The victim’s father died two years ago and Tiwari’s wife had also left him. He was abusing the girl for over a year. “The girl had complained to her mother earlier,” the police said. But lately the relationship between the mother and the uncle had gone sour. On August 22, the girl complained again. The mother finally approached the police on September 9.
