Mumbai: Police are yet to make progress in the case involving the death of Kurla resident Sabir Sheikh (65), whose decomposed body was found at her residence on Monday.

Ms. Sheikh, who was mentally challenged, is believed to have died on February 17 in her ground floor flat in Evergreen Society in Kurla. Her daughter Mumtaz (47), also mentally challenged, stayed with her mother’s decomposing body for two days without seeking help. Some of her neighbours called the police after complaining of a foul stench, who convinced Mumtaz to open the door.

Officers at Vinoba Bhave Nagar police station said Mumtaz, due to her condition, has not been able to say much about the events leading to her mother’s death. API Manohar Karande, Vinoba Bhave Nagar police station, said, “She only said her mother was unwell, and they had no money for treatment or even for food. The post mortem report mentions coronary artery blockage as the cause of death.”

Neighbours said the duo were psychologically affected by an accident in 2006, after which they became reclusive to the point of fighting with anyone who tried to interact with them. Asad Khan, a neighbour, said, “As is the custom, anyone going on Haj seeks forgiveness from everyone around him, including family, friends and neighbours. However, they would they would become angry and ask us to leave them alone.”
