Mumbai: Uday Pathak, the main accused in the quadruple murders in Kurar in 2011, was on Thursday booked by the Colaba police after he allegedly attacked a co-accused on the premises of the Sessions Court. Mr. Pathak assaulted Kalpesh Patel, as the latter had turned approver last year.
Mr. Pathak, Mr. Patel, and the other accused have been lodged in Arthur Road Jail. Mr. Pathak and Mr. Patel were escorted by different police teams to the Sessions Court, and were being taken to the courtroom number 17 when they came across each other at around 12:05 p.m.
“Mr. Pathak lunged at Mr. Patel and attacked him with a sharp strip of iron around four to five inches in length, shouting main tujhe jaan se maar doonga (I would kill you). Mr. Patel sustained injuries to his cheek. Mr. Pathak also assaulted the police teams while they were trying to subdue him,” said an officer with the Colaba police.
Mr. Patel was taken to GT Hospital near Crawford Market, where he was treated and later discharged, while Mr. Pathak was detained by the Colaba police and was sent back to Arthur Road after being questioned.
“Mr. Patel turning approver seems to have been the motive behind the assault. We have registered an FIR against Mr. Pathak and are conducting inquiries,” said Manoj Kumar Sharma, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone I.
The police have booked Mr. Pathak for attempt to murder and assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging his duty under the Indian Penal Code.
Meanwhile, the Prisons Department has initiated an inquiry to find out how Mr. Pathak managed to procure the strip of iron and take it out. The accused were arrested in 2011 after they allegedly murdered four members of a local gang in Kurar. The bodies were found mutilated in the forest area a day after the fight broke out between the two gangs.
This is not the first time that Mr. Pathak has run into trouble with the law after his arrest. In 2014, a surprise check of his cell had revealed cell phones, while in 2015, a gunman had fired a round outside a construction site in Malad to intimidate and extort the builder, allegedly on Mr. Pathak’s behalf.
