Navi Mumbai: Kharghar police has arrested a 36 year old man and are on look out his wife, for cheating two persons by posing as owners of two flats in different buildings in Kharghar where they themselves were tenants.

The couple showed them the flats, took heavy deposits and fled. A case against the couple was registered in November and December, 2017.

Shabbir Nuruddin Shaikh alias Sandeep Kaul, and his wife Parbeen Jahan Nuruddin Shaikh alias Parbeen Jahan Sandeep Kaul (32), originally hail from Jammu & Kashmir and have been residing in Navi Mumbai since 1998. The couple has been accused of cheating Khajamoinuddin Abdul Muthlik (61), a resident of Green Park society in Sector-15, Nerul, of ₹12 lakh and Farzana Sabir Qureshi (36), a Kharghar resident of ₹10 lakh.

“Shaikh alias Shukla was nabbed from a rental flat in Sector-8, Ulwe, where he and his wife shifted a fortnight back. Last year, they advertised in newspapers that they wanted to rent out their flat in Tharwani Rosabella society in Sector-35D, Kharghar.

“In July 2017, when Mr. Muthlik approached him, Shaikh took him to the flat where Parbeen, posing as tenant Mr. Muthlik that she had given a heavy deposit of ₹12 lakh and she was willing to vacate only if Mr. Muthlik paid the equivalent amount. Mr. Muthlik accepted the deal but Shaikh kept delaying in giving possession of the flat till November 2017 by claiming that Parbeen was not vacating. Hence, Mr. Muthlik cancelled the deal and demanded repayment of his deposit,” according to Police Sub Inspector Nitin Shinde from Kharghar.

When Mr. Muthlik learnt that Shaikh was not the flat’s owner and Parbeen was his wife, he realised he had been cheated, and approached the police who registered an FIR against Shaikh. By then the couple had vacated the flat and were absconding.

Further enquiries revealed that a similar cheating case had been registered against the couple at Pydhonie police station last year, Mr. Shinde said.

That case was registered by one Ms. Qureshi who was cheated of ₹10 lakh by the couple using the same modus operandi. This time Shaikh posed as Sandeep Kaul and his wife as Parbeen Kaul and they took the deposit for a flat in Sai Wonder Society in Sector 35, Kharghar.

After cheating two of them, the couple shifted to five different rental flats in Nerul, Kharghar , Taloja and Ulwe to escape being caught by the police. Shaikh also changed 13 SIM cards.

“We have frozen two bank accounts of Shaikh who used fake identity and forged documents to open them. One of the accounts has a deposit of ₹8 lakhs as he had withdrawn ₹4 lakhs. He has been remanded in police custody till February 27,” according to Mr. Shinde .
