HC: why are we setting right the criminal justice system?

PIL takes stock of pending reforms

The Bombay High Court has questioned why problems ailing the State’s criminal administrative system were being brought to court.

The court said, “If we are going to oversee the criminal justice system, criminal administration and prison administration then the Maharashtra government will be happy that the High Court and High Court administration is taking care of everything.”

A Division Bench of Justice S.C. Dharmadhikari and Justice Bharati Dangre was hearing a criminal public interest litigation filed by Shaikh Abdul Naeem in 2011. The PIL dealt with overcrowding in jails and long-pending reforms in the criminal justice system.

The PIL also pointed out that accused were not produced in court owing to lack of police personnel to escort them and non-availability of adequate transportation.

The court said the scope of the PIL was “very wide and we need to identify the important issues that need to be handled”. The matter has been posted for February 20. In the last hearing, the court was informed that only 248 of 2,200 courts in the State did not have video-conferencing equipment.
