Mumbai: The bye-elections in ward no. 62 in Jogeshwari has been put off till further orders, a BMC press release said, after the Shiv Sena approached the Bombay High Court seeking a stay. A by-election had been warranted after independent corporator Changez Multani was disqualified when his caste validity proof documents were disowned by the district caste validity committee.

The Sena had been demanding that the State Election Commission declare the runner-up, party leader Raju Pednekar, as the winner after Mr. Multani’s exit.

Mr. Pednekar approached the HC and obtained a stay order on the bye-election in this ward. He is also challenging Mr. Multani’s win in February 2017 in the Small Causes court. Mr. Pednekar had submitted that since his plea before his Small Causes court was still being heard, the bye-election could not be held for the same ward till the court delivered its verdict in the matter.
