Mumbai: Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday said he has asked the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (MMRCL) to explore the feasibility of a location in Kalina instead of Aarey Colony for the Metro-3 car shed to avoid environmental damage to the area.
On Sunday, The Hindu reported on the meeting between the CM and activists on the car shed project, and the former’s nod to exploring Kalina as an alternative site.
“I met a number of people yesterday, and I asked them to show me a feasible place in place of Aarey. They said Kalina is an option. I have asked Ashwini Bhide (Managing Director, MMRCL) to explore the feasibility of that location,” he said.
Mr. Fadnavis added though the government has no objection to shifting the car shed elsewhere if feasible, it should also be noted that the Metro project will actually reduce the carbon footprint due to the felling of trees in Aarey Colony five-fold. He claimed that he has denied MMRCL’s request to commercially exploit Aarey Colony.
