The Goa government will probe the allegations of bribery against Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sunil Garg through an independent, non-police and impartial authority, Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar announced in the State Legislative Assembly on Friday.
Mr. Parsekar, who also holds the Home portfolio, made a suo motu statement in this regard as soon as the House assembled.
Munnalal Halwai, a businessman from Vasco Da Gama in South Goa, claimed at a press conference on Thursday that the IGP had demanded and accepted a bribe of Rs.5.5 lakh to register a First Information Report in a cheating case he had filed at the Ponda police station in Central Goa. He had also addressed a complaint to the Chief Minister in this regard.
The IGP has denied the allegations.
Activist-lawyer Aires Rodrigues on Friday urged Mr. Parsekar to immediately suspend Mr. Garg and to hand over the investigation to the Goa Lokayukta.
