Mumbai: Four people died and three were injured on Tuesday when their car lost control and jumped the divider into oncoming traffic, colliding head-on with a Thane Municipal Transport bus.

Police at Narpoli police station said the incident occurred around 10.30 a.m., when the victims, all colleagues and residents of Bhiwandi, were headed to work in Andheri. “The car was being driven by Vikrant Singh (23) at high speed, due to which it lost control and veered to the right,” PI Sukhada Narkar, spokesperson, Thane Police, said.

Passing motorists took the victims to Bhiwandi Municipal Hospital, where Singh and three others were declared dead before admission, while the other three are admitted with serious injuries. “The bus driver, Santosh Gaikwad, had to apply the brakes instantly when the car veered into his path, due to which some bus passengers sustained minor injuries,” Senior PI S.D. Jadhav, Narpoli police station, said.

Based on the statements of Mr. Gaikwad and eye-witnesses and preliminary inquiries, Singh was booked posthumously for causing death and injury due to rash and negligent driving under the IPC and the Motor Vehicles Act. Mr. Jadhav said Singh’s blood sample will be tested for alcohol. The other deceased were identified as Niraj Panchal (23), Mihir Utekar (24) and Nirav Mehta (25). The injured are Vaibhav Chheda (23), Ramesh Patel (22) and Santosh Mishra (25).
