A fire damaged a large part of the ceremonial lounge of the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport on Saturday.

The blaze was doused after over three hours by the Mumbai Fire Brigade. No casualties or fatalities were reported.

According to Fire Brigade officers, the control room received a call at 1.46 p.m. about a fire in Terminal 1B of the domestic section of the airport, and rushed resources to the spot. The fire was declared a Level II emergency at 2.04 p.m. and escalated to Level III at 2.44 p.m.

“The fire was confined to a 5,000 sq.ft. area on the ground floor, and affected a conference room and the floor above. Electrical wiring and appliances, wooden furniture, sofa sets, decorative items and the false ceiling of the room were damaged,” said Chief Fire Officer P.S. Rahangdale.

The fire brigade used nine fire tenders and six jumbo tankers to bring the blaze under control by 3.15 p.m. The fire was declared as doused by 4.55 p.m, said officers.

An airport spokesperson said the lounge was used by VVIPs and was not a part of the passenger terminal. The fire had not hampered other airport operations in any way, the spokesperson said.
