Mumbai: A major fire broke out at Nair Hospital’s ENT, audiology and speech therapy department on Thursday. While there were no casualties, the department on the first floor of the college building suffered severe damage.

According to fire service officials, the fire broke out at around 12.45 p.m. and was doused by 3.30 p.m. Five engines and four tankers were involved in the job. Nair Hospital’s dean Dr. Ramesh Bharmal said there were three patients in the department who had come for audiology and speech therapy services.

“As soon as the spark was spotted, they rushed out of the room. The building was evacuated and fire brigade officers were called in,” he said, adding that a short circuit is being suspected. “However, we will know once the fire officers give a detailed report. Patients were not affected in any way as the hospital building is away from the college building.”
