Dashvanth, a murder accused from Chennai who was arrested in Mumbai and managed to escape on Thursday, was nabbed by the Mumbai and Chennai police near Kala Ghoda on Friday afternoon.

On Thursday, the Chennai police team escorting Dashvanth was having lunch at a restaurant in Vile Parle (East) when he managed to assault the officer restraining him and fled with a pair of handcuffs still around one of his wrists. A complaint was registered against him by the Vile Parle police for escaping from custody.

“The officers from Chennai told us that he was staying with a commercial sex worker while in Mumbai, and inquiries indicated that he visited brothels in certain spots between south and central Mumbai regularly. We deployed teams in plain clothes at these spots,” said an officer. His picture was circulated among local informants.

“Around 4.30 p.m. on Friday, we received information about Dashvanth passing through Kala Ghoda towards Colaba, and diverted the nearest team to tail him. He had shaved off his beard, but was recognised by a member of the Chennai police team who joined our personnel in the surveillance,” the officer said.

The Vile Parle police had already requested reinforcements from the local police stations, and the police quickly surrounded Dashvanth. An officer approached him and asked him his name. Dashvanth tried to run away, but was subdued and taken to the Vile Parle police station.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone VIII) Anil Kumbhare confirmed that Dashvanth had been arrested and said that he was being interrogated.
