Mumbai: Eman Ahmed Abd El Aty, once the world’s heaviest woman, can now use both hands and is able to sit without support, doctors at Burjeel Hospital in Abu Dhabi said. Ms. Ahmed was admitted there last month after undergoing bariatric surgery at the city’s Saifee Hospital. They said she is able to operate a TV remote and take her medication.
Dr. Yassin Elshahat, Chief Medical Officer, Burjeel Hospital said, “Her nasal tube was removed after tests to allow her to taste all types of foods. She is able to sit independently and for long periods in a specialised wheelchair. The bed sores are almost healed and she is also able to speak clearer sentences. The next stages of treatment will involve multiple surgeries including liposuction and plastic surgery. This will start a week after Eid.”
Doctors, however, declined to share her weight, only saying there has been a significant reduction. Ms. Ahmed, an Egyptian national, reportedly weighed 500 kg when she was brought to Mumbai on February 11 to undergo weight loss treatment. On May 4, she was shifted to Abu Dhabi by her sister after a fallout with Saifee Hospital authorities. At the time of her discharge from the Mumbai hospital, Ms. Ahmed weighed 170 kg.
Earlier this month, her medical team in Abu Dhabi released a video that showed her playing with a balloon and drinking water from a bottle after opening the lid herself. The team had chalked out a three-phase treatment for her. The first, which has been completed, involved treating her infections and bed sores. Doctors also said her mood has improved significantly.
