The world’s heaviest woman, Eman Ahmed Abd El Aty (36), has lost nearly half her weight since she was started on treatment under Mumbai-based bariatric surgeon Dr. Mufaddal Lakdawala. In an award ceremony on Tuesday, Dr. Lakdawala said the Egyptian national now weighs 262 kg. She weighed a little over 500 kg in February before she was airlifted and brought to Mumbai’s Saifee Hospital.
“After her sleeve gastrectomy surgery and a supervised monitored special diet, she has lost an overall 242 kg from the time she landed in India,” said a statement issued by Dr. Lakdawala, adding that the weight loss has dramatically improved her health parameters. “Her heart, kidney, lung and excess fluid levels are all under control. She continues to be paralysed on the right side and suffers occasional seizures as a result of the brain stroke she had suffered three years ago. An attempt will be made to run a CT Scan to take a look at her brain and cause of the stroke.”
She has been admitted to the specially-created room in Saifee Hospital since February. Last month, a genetic study had revealed that she is the only one in the world to have a gene variant that has never been reported before. Based on the reports of tests that studied 91 of her genes, doctors were planning to enroll her in a clinical trial in the United States on a drug that might help in her monogenic obesity.
