Mumbai: A fleet cab driver rammed his car into two stationary vehicles in the early hours of Tuesday, killing his friend on the spot. Anand Giri (31), who was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol, was arrested by the Vanrai police.

Mr. Giri (31) was proceeding from Goregaon to Dahisar with his friend Somnath Yadav (31), who was in the front passenger seat, when the accident occurred at 3 a.m. on Sonawala Road in Goregaon (East). Mr. Giri and Yadav were residents of Dahisar and were on their way home.

“Mr. Giri was driving his Swift Dzire at full speed and ended up dashing his car against a bus and another car parked outside a post office. The car hit the front portion of the bus, which was empty at the time,” senior police inspector Jyotsna Rasam, Vanrai police station, said.

Locals informed the police and a team was sent to the spot. The police found Yadav unconscious, having hit his head against the windshield in the impact, while Mr. Giri had sustained injuries to his right hand. Both of them were taken to the Indu Hriday Samrat Balasaheb Thackeray Trauma Care Centre at Jogeshwari (East), where Yadav was declared dead on arrival.

After Mr. Giri was discharged, an analysis of his blood samples confirmed that he was inebriated at the time of the accident. “We are awaiting reports to find out if Yadav, too, had traces of alcohol in his blood,” Ms. Rasam said.

Mr. Giri was charged with causing death due to rash and negligent driving, and driving under the influence of alcohol under the Indian Penal Code and the Motor Vehicles Act.
