Mumbai: The Bombay High Court on Tuesday refused to entertain a plea for medical termination of pregnancy of a 20-year-old woman on the grounds of domestic violence. While the Medical Termination of Pregnancy law allows termination only up to 20 weeks, the woman is in 22nd week of pregnancy. In the past, women have approached court for medical termination due to foetal anomaly or rape, but this is a rare case in which the ground is of domestic violence. According to gynaecologist Nikhil Datar, the woman was almost living in confinement till she crossed 20 weeks of pregnancy and her education was discontinued too. “Now she has left her husband’s house and is living with her mother,” Dr. Datar said.
