Mumbai: A 25-year-old man was found to have killed himself in his Shivaji Nagar residence on Wednesday evening. Noor Mohamed, whose wife had also committed suicide on September 16, left a video recorded on his cell phone, holding his wife’s former paramour responsible for both deaths.

Mohamed used to stay with his wife, Sakina. The couple had been married for four years. At the time of Sakina’s death, the police had registered an accidental death report.

The police said, on Wednesday evening, one of Mohamed’s relatives visited him. When repeated knocking elicited no response, he raised an alarm. The door was broken open and Mohamed was taken to Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar, where he was declared dead before admission. A police team was sent to his residence for inquiries.

“We found a video on his cell phone, in which he said that his wife had earlier been having an affair, but had severed relations with her paramour. However, he had been blackmailing her using some pictures of hers that he had, which was causing her depression, according to Mohamed’s narration in the video,” said senior police inspector Deepak Pagare, Shivaji Nagar police station.

Mohamed also said in the video that not only Sakina’s paramour, but also some of his friends would call her at odd hours of the morning, and that they drove her to suicide by repeatedly blackmailing her. He named four people in the video, and the police are working to identify them.

He also said that after her death, he was facing taunts from his family members about Sakina’s character, and from the paramour’s friends, which he was unable to take any more. “To my wife’s family, I would only say that I never treated her badly and always did right by her. If the police are watching this, I beg them for justice,” Mohamed said in the video.

Mr. Pagare said Mohamed had not told them any of this when Sakina committed suicide. “We are waiting for Mohamed’s last rites to be completed, after which we will record statements of his family members about his allegations and also make inquiries with the person that he has accused.”

Sources said the video is being treated as a dying declaration and that Sakina’s paramour, who is a resident of the same locality, is likely to be booked for abetment to suicide under the Indian Penal Code in the next few days. The police have registered an accidental death report. Officers said inquiries have not thrown up any indications of foul play.
