Mumbai: Legislative Council Chairman Ramraje Nimbalkar on Tuesday directed the government to make a statement on the alleged malfunctioning EVM in Buldhana district.

Congress MLC Sanjay Dutt said the complaints of EVM tampering received from across the State in the local body polls should be probed.

Mr. Dutt referred to the machine fraud in Buldhana, which was exposed following a reply under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, which said that the vote went to the lotus symbol, despite pressing another button. “During the zilla parishad polls held in booth no 56 in Sultanpur tehsil, it was found that the LED light was flashing for the BJP candidate when voters caste in favour of an independent candidate. The Collector has confirmed it.”

He claimed that the incident has proved that an EVM can be manipulated. “It confirms the complaints received from across the State that votes polled by other candidates were being registered in favour of BJP candidates. The State and the State Election Commission had ignored them.”

He said the Buldhana EVM fraud has affected the credibility of the free, fair and transparent process of the elections.

Meanwhile, the Buldhana Collector office, in a statement on Monday, said that it was simply a technical fault in one particular EVM.
