Navi Mumbai: The probe into the death of a constable in an accident on Sion-Panvel highway has been delayed as the PWD is yet to name the errant officials.

At around 2 a.m. on August 31, Santosh Eknath Shinde (42) of Vile Parle police station was returning home when his bike hit a pothole and crashed into the railings of Vashi subway. Shinde succumbed to injuries at MGM Hospital on September 7.

The Vashi police registered a case. “The FIR did not name the agency responsible for maintaining the highway. The PWD later confirmed that it was Sion Panvel Tollways Private Limited [SPTPL]. But we cannot make any arrests till the PWD confirms the names of the errant officials,” said an officer.

The SPTPL had named four officials, including two from the PWD, but the department needs to confirm the names.

On September 4, the Nerul police arrested two officials of the SPTPL after 50 accidents were reported at Uran Phata. Ramzan Abdulla Patel, senior manager and project head, and Sanjeet Suresh Srivastav, operations and maintenance manager, were arrested for not taking action despite being served several notices.

Between January and July this year, 16 people have died and 38 seriously injured in 96 accidents on Sion-Panvel highway.
