A constable of Vile Parle police on Thursday succumbed to injuries sustained when his bike hit a pothole on Sion-Panvel road in Vashi on August 31. Santosh Eknath Shinde (42) was returning to his home in Nerul after duty when the accident took place.

Rajendra Shinde, constable at Chunabhatti police station and the deceased’s elder brother, said, “My brother did not see the pothole as the road was flooded and the route lacked street lights. He fell off the bike after hitting the pothole and crashed against the railings of Vashi subway.

Despite wearing a helmet, he sustained severe head injuries. He was sole earning member of the family. Hope the police department helps them.”

Shinde, who joined the police force in 1996, is survived by his mother, wife, a 13-year-old son and an eight-year-old daughter. He was attached with detection branch of Vile Parle police station and won the best detection award four times in his career. He won 20 rewards for solving cases and 128 rewards for recovering stolen items.

The Vashi police have registered a case against the officials of the agency that was responsible for maintaining Sion-Panvel road. Assistant Police Inspector Deepak Barkale from Vashi police station said, “We are yet to get an official confirmation about the name of the agency from the Public Works Department. We will soon arrest the people attached to the agency.”

A case has been registered against officials of the agency under Sections 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 304 (A) (causing death by negligence) of the IPC.
