White knight?

May 03, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:41 am IST - MUMBAI:

India-born Sanjeev Gupta, known as SKG in the British business community, is the likely saviour of thousands of jobs that woud have been lost with the shutdown of Tata Steel’s UK business.

Gupta, 44, is founder and executive chairman of Liberty House, which completed the acquisition of former Tata Steel plate-making facilities in Scotlandand is tipped to be a top contender for the rest of Tata Steel’s UK assets.

“Our team is continuing to evaluate the opportunity to make a bid for other Tata UK assets,” Gupta said, after completing the Scottish deal last week.

Gupta founded what is now the Liberty House Group when he was just 20 and a student at Cambridge University. It is now a $4.3 billion international trading house (which also manufactures and distributes steel and advanced engineering products, according to its website) through a series of acquisitions. It operates from London, Dubai, Hong Kong and Singapore.
