One person died and two were injured after a portion of a dilapidated building, which was being demolished, collapsed in Chandivali in Mumbai on Saturday.

According to civic officials, the building, Krishnan Business Park, had recently been vacated as it had been slated for demolition. Officials said the work was under way in the ground plus six storey commercial building. “The middle portion of the building gave way and labourers who were helping with debris clearing were trapped underneath the rubble. The fire brigade was informed and rescue operations began immediately,” said an officer with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.

Police secures site

Eight fire engines, a rescue van and a quick response vehicle, along with several ambulances were sent to the spot, while the police secured the site to prevent interference by onlookers. The traffic police too chipped in to ensure there were no traffic jams.

Fire officials rescued three labourers and rushed them to a hospital, where one of them was declared dead before admission, while the other two had been admitted with fractures. “We suspect three to four others are still trapped under the debris and operations are under way,” said the police.
