The Navi Mumbai Police have launched a probe into the murder of two young men from Turbhe. The bodies were found early on Wednesday morning. According to sources, the police have zeroed in on a suspect who stays in Turbhe and are questioning him.
According to police sources, the deceased have been identified as Bala Gaikwad (22) and Aslam Sheikh (20), both residents of Anand Nagar slum near Turbhe flyover on Thane Belapur Road.
An officer with the Sanpada police said, “Motorists found both bodies lying in a pool of blood under the flyover at around 7.30 a.m. on Wednesday. They immediately alerted the police control room. Their heads had been smashed in with a heavy and blunt object.”
The bodies were taken to MGM Hospital in Vashi for post-mortem examination. Police teams have fanned out in the area with pictures of the deceased found on their cell phones. Local residents identified the duo and the police made enquiries with his friends and family members.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Sudhakar Pathare, Zone II, Navi Mumbai, said, “Inquiries indicate that the men regularly harassed a resident of their locality. They often bullied him and demanded money for liquor. We are verifying this information.”
Corroborating claims
The police have identified the person and are questioning him about his actions since Tuesday evening.
They are also conducting inquiries with his family members and friends. The location of the suspect’s mobile location is being mapped to corroborate his claims. Inquiries are also being made with residents of the slum to verify whether the suspect was indeed facing harassment at the hands of the young men, the officer said.
Empty liquor bottles were found at the scene of the murder. Police said the men were killed after they consumed liquor at the spot on Tuesday night. According to investigating officers, the killer sneaked up after the men went to sleep and bludgeoned them to death.
