Mumbai: A 25-year-old jawan with the Indian Army committed suicide at a guest house in Mahalaxmi on Monday morning. In a suicide note, the army man has heldi his superiors responsible for his death.
Police said the deceased has been identified as Neeraj Yadav, a Rajasthan resident who was posted with the Indian Army base in Khadki, Pune. They said Yadav booked a room at the Swami Narayan Seva Ashram in Mahalaxmi on Saturday and had been staying there since then.
“On Monday morning, when he did not open the door for a long time, the guest house management opened the door using a spare key and found him dead,” an officer at Gamdevi police station, where a case of accidental death has been registered, said. Yadav was taken to Nair Hospital in Mumbai Central, where he was declared dead before admission.
The police found a suicide note written in Hindi in Yadav’s room. “Yadav has blamed his superiors in the Army for his suicide. The allegations in the note are being verified,” an officer who is part of the investigation said.
Senior PI Netaji Bhopale, Gamdevi police station and DCP (Zone II) Dnyaneshwar Chavan refused to comment on the contents of the suicide note. “Certain parts of the investigation cannot be commented on at this stage,” said Mr. Bhopale. Mr. Chavan added, “Yadav had recently been sent to Delhi on work. After returning to Pune, he came to Mumbai and had been staying at the Swami Narayan Seva Ashram since Saturday. We are conducting inquiries into the matter. An Accidental Death Report has been registered for now.”
The police have contacted Yadav’s superiors in Pune and a team is likely to leave for Pune on Monday night or Tuesday morning. The police are also going through Yadav's call records for clues. His family in Rajasthan has been informed and his parents have left for Mumbai, police said.
