AIB Knockout, a comic roast of actors Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh hosted by filmmaker Karan Johar and organised by the comedy collective All India Bakchod (AIB) that went viral with over four million views in less than four days, has got into legal trouble after a less-known right-wing group filed a complaint against the videos citing obscenity.
Maharashtra Education Minister Vinod Tawde told television channels on Monday evening that the State government would check the content for obscenity and investigate if the event, reportedly attended by 4,000 people, had taken all performance licences.
AIB tweeted: “News sources have informed us that the AIB Knockout will be subject to some manner of official enquiry. At this point, we have no further details, but when we do, we’ll keep you in the loop.”
By form, roasts around the world, are known to feature offensive insults as a form of subversion to celebrate the spirit of humour and the ability of the subjects to take a joke and laugh at themselves. The organisers had said that the proceeds from the event, amounting to Rs. 40 lakh, were donated to charity projects.
Later in the evening, Minister Tawde tweeted: “On #AIBRoast, will only enquire if the AIB had taken appropriate certificate. No moral policing if they r [sic] allowed by law, I can’t stop them."
