The Charkop police on Friday arrested a 23-year-old man for raping a 13-year-old girl.
The victim’s parents found out that their daughter was 27-weeks pregnant when they approached a local doctor in Kandivali on Wednesday after the girl began gaining too much weight. The police said that the accused lived in the same locality and was arrested based on the victim’s statement. An officer said, “The victim was initially disturbed and was unable to give a statement. Later, she revealed the identity of the accused. We picked him up from his house and arrested him on Friday.”
The police said the accused had been raping the victim for the past six months. He has been charged with rape under the Indian Penal Code and with sexual assault under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
Mumbai Police spokersperson DCP Rashmi Karandikar said the accused had been remanded in police custody till August 11.
The case was reported less than two weeks after the Supreme Court rejected a 10-year-old rape victim’s plea for abortion. After the FIR was registered, the girl was moved to Asha Sadan. A source said the girl’s parents feel that keeping her away from home will have a negative impact on her.
