A 38-year-old woman was killed by gunshot at Mavattom near Poozhithodu in Chakkittappara panchayat on Saturday night. The victim was identified as Shaiji, wife of Chithrangadan.

The police said the woman was allegedly shot at when one of her family members was examining a country-made gun reportedly recovered from a nearby farm.

Though the police suspect Shaiji’s son of having handled the gun, the investigators are yet to receive evidence regarding the same.

The police said the incident took place around 10.30 p.m. on Saturday. The family had immediately informed the police about the incident.

The house was located close to a forest region and a detailed investigation was required to confirm that the gun did not belong to the family, the police said.

Confidential statements received by the police that relationship between the husband and the wife had soured after an alleged theft operated by their sons would also be investigated.

The body of the victim was taken to Kozhikode Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination on Sunday.
