The Revenue Department has decided to take comprehensive and speedy measures to tackle the drinking water crisis in Kozhikode district.
A meeting chaired by District Collector N. Prasanth at the Collectorate here on Monday decided to commence the supply of drinking water in tanker lorries in regions that experience water scarcity.
Tahsildars, secretaries of local self-government bodies, officials of the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) have been asked to identify the areas affected and begin supply of water at the earliest.
The meeting came to conclusion that the drinking water shortage was growing with each passing day in the summer.
Reports on water requirement should be submitted through tahsildars.
An officer would also be deputed at the taluk office to streamline the water distribution system.
As the model code of conduct for the Assembly polls was in force, Mr. Prasanth said that the supply of drinking water should be done by government officials without the support of elected representatives and political parties.
More water sources would be identified apart from the water tanks of the KWA at Mavoor and Kovoor.
The quality of water should be checked at the KWA laboratories if water was supplied from other water bodies.
The water from the tanks of Japanese-aided drinking water project could also be utilised for the purpose.
The Collector has also sought an urgent report on the water bodies in the district.
Steps would be taken to distribute water via canals.
