Calicut University teachers owing allegiance to the United Democratic Front (UDF) cancelled their proposed strike from Monday in view of a promise given by the university authorities to consider their demands.
Teachers under the banner of the Calicut University Teachers Association (CUTA) were to launch an indefinite strike to press their demands, including withdrawal of disciplinary action against three teachers. The university promised the CUTA leaders to revoke the suspension of Umer Thasneem, assistant professor in the Department of English, subject to the decision of the Chancellor and the verdict of the High Court. The university also promised to withdraw the disciplinary action against teachers A.K. Pradeep and Molly Kuruvila after getting the report of a committee. CUTA president P. Raveendran announced the withdrawal of their strike in view of the assurances from Vice-Chancellor M. Abdul Salam. Their rival organisation, the Association of Calicut University Teachers (ACT), meanwhile, accused the university authorities of humiliating the entire teaching community.
